McGrath – Agility by Transitioning

I mentioned a while back that Rita Gunther McGrath writes in her book “The End of Competitive Advantage” that firms should learn how to balance stability and ability. The stability part is found in stable adherence to values and relationships. But what about agility?

Does it mean the firm must be constantly re.organizing? In fact, not. Instead of reorganizing, the nimble firms transition. They are “shape shifters”, always looking for the  next step up and transitioning to it, rather than hiring and firing.

It is an interesting concept — organic rather than mechanical growth.
