Take my word for it. Not all companies are serious. Some are. These are companies where folks believe in where they are going. They like what they do and want to do it better for more. They are learning. then there are companies where folks don’t really care. They want to make money, but they don’t know where the hell they are going. Instead they drift and obsess over cost cutting.
Cringely has been arguing for some time now that IBM is a zombie company. He is at it again. One point is worth remembering — companies have to be learning something if they will succeed down the road. And if you want to test if a company has gone zombie, ask them what they are learning. You might be surprised by the answers you get. If they are not satisfactory, hold your nose and run!
